A simple and comforting traditional Irish soda bread recipe that yields a crunchy crust and soft interior, perfect for any meal.
Ingredients

- 3 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
- 1/2 cup currants or raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking soda, and optional sugar.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and gradually pour in the buttermilk and melted butter.
- Gently stir the mixture until a shaggy dough forms.
- Pour the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently about four times.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
- Dust the top with flour and make a large X slash on top of the dough.
- Bake for 15 minutes at 450°F, then lower the temperature to 400°F (200°C), rotate the pan, and continue baking for another 25-30 minutes.
- Allow the bread to cool for at least 20 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
Notes
Best enjoyed with butter or honey. Store leftovers at room temperature for up to 2-3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
