Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 4 cups chicken or beef broth
  • 2 cups uncooked pasta (like rotini or fusilli)
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Parmesan cheese for serving
  • Fresh basil for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the ground beef or sausage over medium heat until fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add diced onion and minced garlic and sauté until the onion is translucent.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, broth, dried basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil.
  4. Add uncooked pasta and cook according to package instructions until tender.
  5. Stir in ricotta cheese and half of the mozzarella cheese until well combined.
  6. Serve hot, topped with remaining mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, and fresh basil.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a splash of red wine while sautéing the onions and garlic. Use different types of pasta for variety, and stir in more ricotta for creaminess.
