Description
An indulgent twist on traditional French toast, combining creamy richness with a caramelized sugar crust, perfect for brunch.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of brioche or challah bread
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (for caramelizing)
- Fresh berries or powdered sugar (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Slice the bread: Cut the brioche or challah into thick slices and arrange them in a greased baking dish.
- Whisk the custard: In a large bowl, combine the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until well blended.
- Soak the bread: Pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they soak thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is beautifully golden and firm.
- Caramelize the sugar: After baking, sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until it turns golden and crisp.
- Serve: Enjoy warm, topped with fresh berries or a dusting of powdered sugar.
Notes
Soak the bread overnight for the best flavor. You can use your oven’s broiler as an alternative to a kitchen torch.
