Description
A hearty and satisfying Irish Steak Pie filled with tender beef and vegetables, all wrapped in a flaky puff pastry.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lb beef chuck, cut into chunks
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup red wine
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 package of puff pastry (thawed)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large pot, heat vegetable oil over medium. Sauté onion, carrots, and garlic until tender, about 5 minutes.
- Add beef chunks and brown on all sides for about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in beef broth, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 1 hour until beef is tender and sauce thickens.
- On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry and line a pie dish with half of it.
- Pour the beef mixture into the dish, spreading evenly.
- Cover with the other half of puff pastry, sealing edges with a fork.
- Cut slits in the top for steam to escape and brush with beaten egg.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
- Serve hot, ideally with creamy mashed potatoes or a fresh salad on the side.
Notes
Brown the meat well for depth of flavor. Keep the pastry cold for a flaky crust. Experiment with herbs for different flavors.
