Description

A hearty and satisfying Irish Steak Pie filled with tender beef and vegetables, all wrapped in a flaky puff pastry.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lb beef chuck, cut into chunks
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 package of puff pastry (thawed)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large pot, heat vegetable oil over medium. Sauté onion, carrots, and garlic until tender, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add beef chunks and brown on all sides for about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in beef broth, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 1 hour until beef is tender and sauce thickens.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the puff pastry and line a pie dish with half of it.
  6. Pour the beef mixture into the dish, spreading evenly.
  7. Cover with the other half of puff pastry, sealing edges with a fork.
  8. Cut slits in the top for steam to escape and brush with beaten egg.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  10. Serve hot, ideally with creamy mashed potatoes or a fresh salad on the side.

Notes

Brown the meat well for depth of flavor. Keep the pastry cold for a flaky crust. Experiment with herbs for different flavors.
